Peptide

A peptide is a molecule made of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Peptides are shorter than proteins — generally from two up to a few dozen amino acids — and the specific order of those amino acids (the sequence) defines the molecule.

Many research compounds are peptides or peptide analogs designed to interact with a particular biological target. Because sequence determines identity, confirming the sequence by mass spectrometry is central to quality control.
