Glutathione: The Master Antioxidant — Research Overview

What is glutathione?

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide built from three amino acids — glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It is found in virtually every cell and is the principal intracellular antioxidant studied in redox biology.

Mechanism

Redox cycling (GSH ↔ GSSG)

Glutathione neutralizes reactive oxygen species by donating an electron, converting from its reduced form (GSH) to an oxidized form (GSSG). Enzymes recycle GSSG back to GSH. The GSH/GSSG ratio is studied as a readout of cellular oxidative stress.

Hepatic detoxification

In the liver, glutathione is studied for its role in phase II conjugation — binding compounds to make them water-soluble for clearance — which is why it is a frequent subject of detoxification research.1

Why the injectable route is studied

Oral glutathione faces debated bioavailability because digestion breaks the tripeptide down. Research has therefore examined non-oral routes for delivering intact glutathione in laboratory contexts.
